HISTORY OF HAYDEN

Located in the middle of the Yampa River Valley, Hayden was founded in 1876, and named for F.V. Hayden who surveyed areas in the West. Ranching, agriculture and coal mining soon established Hayden, and continues to be a viable aspect to the local economy. Routt County, which extended for almost 200 miles east to west, was split in 1911. The railroad then arrived in 1913. Today, the town's people strive not only to promote growth but, instead, they are attempting to maintain the town’s Western charm and vitality. Downtown, Walnut Street retains its historic charm while offering services for modern day life. According to the 2000 Census, the population was 1,634
