Library Expansion Well Underway
Steamboat Springs- The $11.4 million expansion of the Bud Werner Memorial Library is well underway and is projected to be open for business by late summer. The 23,400 square foot addition will feature an art installation by Minneapolis artist Brad Kaspari, an expanded public computer area and spaces designed specifically for children and teens.Upon entering the new library space, visitors will be greeted by Kaspari’s art installation which is inset in the floor of the lobby. The intent of the installation is to bring the surrounding environment inside of the library through the use of topographical lines made of inlaid brass and strips of Avonite representing the confluence of Soda Creek and the Yampa River.
According to library director Chris Painter, “We want to create an artful building.”
A great amount of thought has also gone into the children’s area of the library which is designed to communicate with children on a nonverbal level. The bookshelves are arranged in progressive heights, drawing the older readers to the taller shelves and the younger ones to lower bookcases.
The second floor will host a large area for public computers as well as wireless connectivity for personal laptops. The new design promises plenty of work space with individual work desks and several small rooms designed for two or three people to consult privately on projects.
Painter sums up the new space best, “It is neither residential nor commercial space. It is the community’s living room. This building achieves a balance between great public space and providing the technical tools people need to help them with their research.”
