Ken Carlson has spent the bulk of his life working toward a singular goal: being a wildlife painter.

"It's all I've ever done.  It's been my goal in life to paint wildlife.  I did a lot of commercial work, but always with one goal, and that was to become an animal painter," Carlson said.

Carlson's work is featured at Steamboat Art Museum through the winter.  The exhibition is a showcase of years of research into seeking the perfectly lot landscape, learning to depict animals of all kinds and finding the right way to match those skills, Carlson said.

Carlson places his North American wildlife into slightly abstracted landscapes, making the animals pop out of the painting with deep layers of paint and texture.

All paintings on display are from

The Atira Group will present its Ski Time Square development plan - a proposal that includes five buildings with about 200 residential units and seven commercial spaces near the base of the ski area - along with an apparent resolution of issues with the Ski Time Square Association.

Those issues with the nearby condo association were one reason the Steamboat Springs City Council tabled the development plan in October.  Another reason was to allow more time for discussion of interim plans for the 4.6 - acre site, for which Atira has requested a grace period of 10 years before pulling a building permit.  Heading into tonight's City Council meeting, progress appears to have been made on both reasons for the delay.

Atira is redeveloping Ski Time Square and

The Apple iPod touch and iPhone come along on ski trips, but there are plenty of new outdoor applications that can turn the otherwise useful devices into invaluable tools, whether you're shredding the backcountry or skiing the groomers.

Map applications

Must have: iTrailMap 3D Cost: $4.99

There is no shortage of applications that offer trail maps, but there are none better than the iTrailMap 3D.  A common problem with the other trail map apps is an inability to zoom in far enough to actually read the map.  iTrailMap 3D offers plenty of zoom and a map of the Steamboat Ski Area is easy to read and to navigate.

The 3D designation comes from a GPS feature that tracks a skier or snowboarder's progress on the mountain.  At the end of the day, it's easy to

The storms continue to roll into Steamboat.  Six inches new was reported overnight but locals know there will be at least a foot in the trees since our mountain likes to outdo itself by directing extra snow into the trees.  There is nothing like gliding silently through the trees on a bluebird powder day and just the thought of it brings back good memories of countless faceshots, Steamboat Co's signature frosted trees and the improbable amount of fun it is to float on fresh powder.  Any images come to mind for you?  Come out soon and join us on the slopes.
