Downtown

Nowhere symbolizes the essence of Steamboat Springs more than downtown. It’s a modern mountain town with a distinctly western feel, owing to its rich ranching heritage.

Founded in 1875 by James Harvey Crawford, Steamboat and the Yampa Valley became synonymous with agriculture earning the nickname ‘Cow Town USA.’ Despite the town’s evolution, Lincoln Avenue (the main street) remains wide enough to run a cattle drive through it.

The backdrop to the heart of town is Howelsen Hill, named after a Norwegian stonemason who put the townsfolk on skis in the early 1900’s. Over a century later, Howelsen remains the home of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club and is the oldest operating ski area in the country.

Throughout the year, Steamboat folks love to celebrate the season and will use any excuse to close Lincoln Avenue down for a party. The 105 year-old Winter Carnival kicks off the year, followed by Fourth of July celebrations, and the Halloween Stroll. Summer brings the Saturday farmer’s market to Yampa Street, art shows and free music concerts.

Downtown offers a mix of shops, galleries, family-run boutiques and over 75 restaurants, bars, and cafes. Luxury residences have been added in recent years, which are proving popular.

Buyers can expect an eclectic mix of properties from traditional cabins and old-world cottages, to stunning new builds with a modern twist. Live in the hub of daily happenings in a riverside apartment off Yampa Street or opt for serenity and stay on the periphery by Butcherknife Canyon.

Walking and biking in and around town is encouraged. A multitude of pathways link neighborhoods to parks, trails and open space. Soda Creek Elementary, Steamboat Springs High School, and Yampa Valley High School are all situated in the center of town. The free City bus links downtown to the mountain, plus locations on the east and west sides of Steamboat.

Downtown living is suited to those who wish to embrace the spirit of Steamboat and enjoy a neighborhood vibe.
